Russian Video: Dog Barbos and Unusual Cross. Bootleggers (Movie)

Hello,

Our regular readers already know the name of outstanding Russian comedy-movie director Leonid Gaidai (1923–1993). We already watched his remarkable screen version of O. Henry’s stories “The Roads We Take”, “Makes the Whole World Kin” and “The Ransom of Red Chief” – Strictly Business (Деловые люди), 1962. What we like very much!

Today we will watch his another early-made movie titled Absolutely Seriously (Совершенно серьёзно) (1961) where we meet his famous comic trio of crooks: Experienced, Coward and Fool – who brought him a great success and whom we’ll meet again and again in his others movies! They are always up to something no-good, and they always fail at their escapades. The movie was made in two segments:

“Dog Barbos and Unusual Cross” (Пёс Барбос и необычный кросс)

“Bootleggers” (Самогонщики)

Cast:
Yury Nikulin as Fool
Georgy Vitsin as Coward
Evgeny Morgunov as Experienced

Russian Video: The Overcoat (Шинель), 1926. Movie!

Hello,

Russian Video from Russia continue celebrating 200 anniversary of outstanding Russian writer Nikolai Gogol. This weekend we planned to show you a scary movie “Viy”. But I still can not get it uploaded so my suggestion is let’s today watch an old silent movie “The Overcoat” (Шинель) made in 1926 by Grigori Kozintsev and Leonid Trauberg. This movie is based on Nikolai Gogol’s stories “The Overcoat” and “Nevsky Prospect”.

I personally think that is interesting to watch a movie about life 170 years ago and that’s also interesting to watch how they made movies 90+ years ago. So lets look 😉

Russian Video: Republic Shkid (Movie)!

Hello,

We apologize for delaying our Movie for Weekend, there was a technical reason that caused it.

Now we are back in business and glad to watch together with you an old Soviet movie “Republic Shkid” (Республика ШКИД), 1966:

The film is based on the eponymous book, written by two former street gangsters – Grigori Belykh and Leonid Panteleyev. Film is set in the 1920s St. Petersburg, Russia. Streets of the city are full of the homeless boys. They are caught to be raised and educated at the correction school named after Dostoevsky. The boys are street smart and difficult. But the faculty stands up to the challenge. The teaches are being devoted and caring, and gradually win the respect of the most difficult kids. The school director (the actor:Sergei Yursky) is a refined intellectual, who becomes a role model for the boys (IMDb).

Watching such movies is one more way to feel that era… The book (on what based the movie) is semi-autobiographical, semi-fictitious account of the Dostoevsky school written by two former students accurately reflects the school’s life and V. N. Soroka-Rosinsky’s part in it

For our readers who wants to know more:

V. N. Soroka-Rosinsky [Vicknixor in the movie] (1882-1960) – innovative Soviet teacher, director of the Dostoevsky School for the reeducation of homeless and delinquent but clever teenage boys, Leningrad from 1920-1925. Examines his theoretical writings and describes his activities at the Dostoevsky School.

We found a very interesting site devoted The Republic Shkid (in Russian): Республика ШКиД: книга, фильм, школа.

Russian Video: A Man with a Movie Camera!

Hello,

How we’ve recently promised you this weekend we will watch an old Russian full-length documentary video. A Man with a Movie Camera (Человек с киноаппаратом) was made as an experimental 1929 silent documentary film by Russian director Dziga Vertov, editor Elizaveta Svilova (who was also his wife), and his cinematographer, Mikhail Kaufman (also his brother). The idea behind this movie was to show life it is lived. This movie became a portrait of one day in big Soviet city. Really, there were three cities: Moscow, Kiev and Odessa.

The music what was used in this movie was composed from notes left by the director.
