Russian Video: Peterhof!

Hello,

Today we will watch a very beautiful video about a very beautiful place! This video about Peterhof(Petergof) has been recently made by our Internet-friend Nikolai Ganenkov. That is his first video and we hope to see other videos from him!

For our readers who wants to know more about Peterhof:
The world-famous “capital of fountains” or “Russian Versailles” was founded by Peter I. In 1918 the main summer residence of the Russian emperors became state property and by 1941 ten museums of art and history had been opened on its premises. During the war of 1941-45, Peterhof was razed to the ground by the Nazis. Restoration work began in as early as 1944, after the Nazis were expelled from the town, and, for the most part, the ensemble was returned to its former splendour. The first fountain began to operate once more in 1946. The Hermitage pavilion reopened in 1952 and the Great Palace in 1964. In 1966 the Great Cascade was fully reconstructed. Restoration work is, however, still in progress.

Building of the palace and park ensemble and a landing-stage for boats bound for Kotlin Island began in the early 1700s. The first palaces and pavilions were erected, parks were laid out and a network of fountains constructed. These were later repeatedly expanded and modified…. You can continue reading here.

Best wishes and
think maybe it’s time for you to make your own video… 😉

A Modern Russian Cartoon: The Dog Door (Собачья Дверца)!

Hello,

Today we will watch a very good, beautiful and touching Russian modern cartoon The Dog Door (Собачья Дверца), 2007 production by Animos Studio. This cartoon has English subtitles.

We were really stunned by the cartoon! I think the more kids will grew up on such cartoons the better and kinder place the world become! And what do you think?

For our readers who wants to know more:
This cartoon based on the novel “Goodbye, Ravine” by Konstantin Sergiyenko (“До свидания, овраг!”, Константин Константинович Сергиенко (1979)).

We found even such description of this novel: “Can any other nation’s literature rival that of Russia when it comes to the density of its dog population?… Where else do we find so many instances of dogs invested with human-like powers of thought and feeling? Dogs which are not simply house pets, but friends, relatives and confidantes?”

Our Russian readers can read this novel here.

Best wishes for everybody,
Svet, Kyle and our dog Boza whom we found at gas station a year ago.

How to say Happy Birthday in Russian!

Hello,

We get a lot of questions from English speaking people “How to say Happy Birthday in Russian?” So today we’ll answer. When someone has birthday Russians say “С Днём Рождения!“. And they pronounce it somehow like that “S dniom rajdenia!” Here are I tried my best:

And we don’t have a song “Happy Birtday to You!” but we have a “Crocodile Gena’s Song” from cartoon “Cheburashka and Crocodile Gena”:

For our readers who wants to know more about Crocodile Gena and his song:

The 50-year-old Gena works as a crocodile in a zoo. He plays the garmon and likes to sing. His two well-known songs are “Pust’ begut neuklyushe…”
One rainy day, which happens to be his birthday, Gena sings the song “Пусть бегут неуклюже пешеходы по лужам…” (Let the pedestrians run clumsily over the puddles), which contains the line: “unfortunately, a birthday happens only once a year.” This song, written by Vladimir Shainsky, has since become known as “Crocodile Gena’s Song”. It continues to be extremely popular among Russophones of various ages and generations.

And we found a translation of the lyrics:

Let the pedestrians walk clumsily through the puddles
And let the water run over the asphalt in a river.
It’s unclear to the passersby,
On this rainy day,
Why I’m so happy.

But I’m playing the concertina
For all the passersby to see.
Unfortunately,
Birthdays
Only come once a year.

I wish that a wizard
Would fly in, in a light blue helicopter,
And show a movie for free.
He would wish me a happy birthday
And probably, leave as a present
500 ice cream sandwiches.

But I’m playing the concertina
For all the passersby to see.
Unfortunately,
Birthdays
Only come once a year.

Beautiful Russia: Kenozerye National Park!

Hello,

Today we are watching a very beautiful and interesting video from Russian National Park “Kenozerye”. If you are interested to watch everyday Russian life, if you like documentary movies about nature – this video worth to watch! We watched whole this long movie 26 minutes with great interest!

Short information about Kenozerye:

A secluded corner of the ancient Russian North and all its traditions has been preserved deep in the taiga forests of Arkhangelsk Province – far from the destructive forces of wars, revolutions, cities, and roads. Here, forested hills line the sinuous shore of the enormous Lake Kenozero, broken only by the occasional pastoral village lolling along its shore. To the south, the oval of Lake Lekshmozero interrupts dense stands of spruce, pine, and deciduous trees growing on knolls throughout in the park. Rounded silhouettes of sacred groves with stands of ancient trees dot the shores of the two lakes. Quaint wooden chapels with dome-shaped ceilings painted with images of saints keep vigil on hillsides and in valleys, having been restored to their original beauty. Today, all these treasures are protected in Kenozersky National Park, making the reserve a haven for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike – offering boating, hiking, cultural and historical attractions, and comfortable accommodations.

There are 322 species of terrestrial vertebrates in Kenozersky National Park, including 50 kinds of mammals and 263 birds. Fourteen species of predators inhabit the park….

An old Soviet Cartoon: "Run, Little Stream!" (Беги, ручеек!)

Hello,

“Run, Little Stream!” (Беги, ручеек!) This old and a very kind Soviet cartoon we would recommend for everybody – especially for little kids! We watched it several times with great pleasure… That’s a very kind cartoon for very little kids and that is metaphoric animated story for their parents.

It seems now they don’t made such nice, kind and maybe a little naive cartoons for our kids. I think good cartoons for little kids must be a little bit naive! And what do you think?

Part 1.

Part 2.

Just a little bit information for people who wants to know more:
This cartoon was made in 1963 by director Peter Nosov. And yes we will publish another cartoons by this director! 😉

Have a nice Sunday,
Svet and Kyle
