Some of our readers asked about an old soviet movie “Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears“(Moskva slezan ne verit/Москва слезам не верит), 1979. So this weekend Russian Video from Russia shows this good movie.
The story is as old as Soviet Union (that’s still true for Russia and countries belong to Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). And I don’t know if it was true in Russian Empire before 1917). People from province always wanted to get in Moscow to find easier and better life and more possibilities. Life is not that easier for people who chose this way they have to prove that Moscow needs them, not just they need to live in Moscow. So three girls who came to Moscow were settled in the same room in a dormitory and became friends… Three girls – three different lives (the late 1950s to the late 1970s). I don’t think I should retell you this touching movie… Who’s main idea is “Moscow does not believe in tears – Moscow believes in love“.
Awards and recognition:
* Grand Prize at the IFF in Portugal, 1980. * Oscar for Best Foreign Film, 1980. * Saint-Michel Prize for best Actress (Vera Alentova) at the Brussels IFF, 1981.
US President Ronald Reagan watched the film several times prior to his meetings with the President of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, in order to gain a better understanding of the “Russian soul”.

It’s made by stories of two Russian folklorists and writers Boris Shergin and Stepan Pisakhov. It’s a great collection of Russian Pomors‘ (Russian settlers and their descendants on the White Sea coast) fairy tails.
This movie has English subtitles – if you don’t see them please push CC-buton on the player!
You can watch this movie fullscreen version if you push “fullscreen button” on the player.

Today we continue watching a wonderful Russian movie about greatest English detective Sherlock Holmes. For our readers who missed the first part we recommend to watch it first:
Today we are watching a movie: Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson (1979), Second episode: “Bloody Inscription” (based on A Study in Scarlet).
So we are watching the second part:
A lot of watchers admire the music in Sherlock Holmes movies. The author of this music is Russian composer Vladimir Dashkevich. Composer of music for more than 70 Soviet and Russian movies, was born on the 20th January 1934. Music from the movies was 5 times nominated for Nika award and one time it won Nika.
Vladimir Dashkevich tells: The music for Sherlock Holmes movie was composed without any afford. His friend and director of the movie Igor Maslennikov constantly called him from Leningrad (where they were shooting the movie) to Moscow and reminded that was time to compose the music. When he called me the third time I did not want to upset him took the phone closer to piano and started to play the first what came to my head. That’s how the famous overture was made. When someone accused Picasso for panting one of his masterpieces for 15 minutes. He told that he painted it 15 minutes and whole life. I could tell about the music the same. I love the Conan Doyle stories from my childhood and this music was born in me long long time ago, it just waited its time to sound. People tells that the music was composed in English style. I think that is the dream about beautiful and romantic England, a dream what was born in Russia.
To download the music from the Sherlock Holmes movies you can on the site: Music from Sherlock Holmes Movies. When you click on music-link first you’ll see Yandex page (because Yandex hosts these files with mp3) click on the mp3-link and you’ll get the music.
And one more good news for all us: Next year we’ll continue to watch Russian movies about Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson.
Have a good weekend, Russian Video from Russia Svet and Kyle
